Ahalya might be familiar with the Ramayana, where Lord Rama puts his leg on the stone to convert her from rock to human.
Once, there was a famine in that region; the entire village was starving. Accept for the ashram of Sage Gautama. His home was full of grains and abundant food, all thanks to his extreme devotion and regular prayers to Lord Shiva.
However, this made the other sages envious of Sage Gautama. Hence, they plotted to send a cow to graze off the entire crops in the farms around the ashram. When this came to the notice of Rishi Gautama, He tried to scare the cow away.
In the process, the cow unfortunately died. The sages accused Gautama Rishi of Gau – Hatya ( sin for killing a cow ). To get atonement for this sin, Sage Gautama then started praying to Lord Shiva to purify himself and his ashram from this sin. Finally, Lord Shiva was pleased with the penance of Sage Gautama and asked him for a wish.
Birth of River Godavari
Sage Gautama wished for the river Ganga to flow from this region, which could purify this sin and pull the area out of the long famine. Lord Shiva happily agreed and released a part of the River Ganga from the locks of his hair. This river started to be called Gautami ( Presently, we know it as the River Godavari). River Godavari is also called Dakshina Ganga, which begins in the region of Nashik and meets with the Bay of Bengal in Antravedi, a small area in Andhra Pradesh. This place is also called Dakshina Kashi.
Lord Shiva visited Sage Gautama along with the instances of Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma. Thus, Sage Gautama also requested Lord Shiva to reside and protect that place, to which he agreed.
